Avoid Becoming a Victim of Theft Rowe Offers Advice

$

0

A chief deputy at the Starke County Sheriff’s Department has released a statement advising residents of a rash of daytime break-ins throughout the county and offered tips on how to avoid becoming a victim. Chief Deputy Brack Rowe said that while local law enforcement agencies in the county and the surrounding area have been making every attempt to stop and catch these thieves, there are still a number of steps residents can take to keep their belongings safe.

Rowe urges residents to make their home look occupied and difficult to break into by using motion sensitive lights on the exterior of the home, install deadbolt locks on all exterior doors, and keep your garage door, exterior door and windows locked, even when you are home.

In addition, installing special track locks on sliding glass doors and windows prevents them from being forced or pried open. Make sure valuables in your home are not visible from the street, and use blinds and drapes on windows to conceal these items.

Report suspicious people or activity to law enforcement immediately, and do what you can to reduce your own vulnerability and minimize the possibility that you could be a victim of such crimes.

Starke County Sheriff’s Department Pill Drop-Box Used Often, Says Cowen

$
0
0

The Starke County Sheriff’s Department is home to a 24-hour prescription drop-box, giving residents the opportunity to drop off expired, unused or unwanted prescription medications 365 days a year. Previously, the sheriff’s department only housed a prescription drop-box during programs once per year, and now, Sheriff Oscar Cowen said they’re happy to have a full-time drop-box available at all times.

Cowen said the program is all thanks to Joan Haugh with Community Services of Starke County, who approached Cowen and explained that they had a grant to fund the drop-box. Cowen said the box is installed and it’s being used more than he expected.

“It’s been a program that has worked out great for us, thanks to the assistance of Joan Haugh and Community Services, we were able to install a regular drop box into the lobby of the jail and it’s been utilized frequently,” Cowen said.

The drop-box allows anyone to drop off medication to be disposed of, and a lock-and-key system allows police to keep all deposits safe and secure until the box is emptied out.

“So, with that, we then have a key to the container to empty them in a box that we secure and turn the pills over to the state,” said Cowen.

Sheriff Oscar Cowen

Sheriff Oscar Cowen

The Starke County Commissioners at their meeting this week continued discussion regarding the sale of police vehicles. Sheriff Oscar Cowen approached the commissioners and explained that he is interested in selling three vehicles to help fund the purchase of a new prisoner transport van. Cowen said the department recently retired a Crown Victoria police cruiser, and he would like to sell that vehicle, the old transport van and a DARE trailer. County Attorney Martin Lucas explained that any items valued at more than $1000 must be advertised and sold at a public auction, sealed bid sale, internet sale, or other public sale.

Cowen said he thinks the best option they have would be to use a council member’s eBay account, which would only cost a small commission of the sales. Commissioner Kathy Norem said a local auctioneer might be interested in the sale and they should keep it local. Commissioner Kent Danford agreed.

The commissioners instructed Cowen to check with auctioneer Ben Osinski to see if he would like to handle the items at auction. If the items do not meet their reserve price, they will likely be sold online.

Starke County Sheriff Warns of Telephone Scam

Several Starke County residents have gotten telephone calls recently stating that their grandson or granddaughter is in jail and they need to send $6,000 right away in order to bail them out. Sheriff Oscar Cowen says these calls are scams. He says the best thing to do is hang up on the person. If you are worried your grandchild may be in trouble, ask the caller for a telephone number, hang up, and check to make sure your grandchild is not in jail. A red flag in any sort of telephone scam is a request to either send money via wire transfer, as that money is untraceable and cannot be recovered. Scammers also ask people to load funds to a prepaid credit card and use it as a means to transfer money. Again, these funds cannot be traced and are virtually impossible to recover.

Today begins a three-week enforcement on impaired and dangerous driving by 250 law enforcement agencies across the state of Indiana.

Officers from the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Department and Starke County Sheriff’s Department, as well as all local police departments, will be involved in this “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” blitz through March 23.

March is a time for the rush and excitement of basketball season as well as the highly anticipation of the celebration of St. Patrick’s Day. The increased rate of alcohol consumption during these events have found the need to conduct these saturation patrols.

You are urged to have a designated driver if you plan on meeting friends at a bar, attending a sporting event gathering, or a St. Patrick’s Day party.

Operation Pull Over is a federally funded enforcement initiative administered by the Traffic Safety Division of the Criminal Justice Institute.
